This past weekend the GMC JC Women's Golf program was pleased to host Amanda Russell (2018) for an official visit. Amanda hails from Cape Coral, Florida and is a senior attending Oasis Charter High School. She has been playing golf since the 6th grade having been introduced to the game by her father, Mike Russell. She is an accomplished and well balanced athlete as she began competitive gymnastics at the age of 6 until the age of 12 where she reached level 7. From there she went on to play club volleyball which transitioned into starting on the varsity HS team when they won the 2014 District 11 Championship and advanced to the Regional Finals.
In recent years she has given much of her attention and athletic focus on getting better at and competing in golf. In 2015 Amanda was named Most Valuable Player for Oasis Charter School and again in 2016. Amanda just finished her senior season with a 46 scoring average with a career low of 41. One of her highlights on the golf course was a 4th place finish in the Cape Coral City Championship as well as being the leader on the girls golf team. "I thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet and play golf with Amanda this past weekend. I was impressed with not only how athletic her swing is but I really appreciated the even temperment she showed out on the course. She has a very solid foundation with her golf game and clearly has a passion to compete and improve. Her scores have continued to drop over the past couple of years and I am confident that she will continue to get better. There is alot of upside for her we would be very fortunate to be able to have Amanda join us as part of the Bulldog family by joining our first two commits, Isabella Samples and Abigail Summersill, in our inaugural season in the fall of 2018", stated Head Coach, Sean Gillespie.
Not only has she been competitive on the golf course but she also takes her academics serious as she has a 4.65 GPA. Amanda stated, "My studies are my first priority so I'm looking for a college that would be a good fit academically as well as athletically. I love golf very much because once I meet a goal, I know that it was the hard work that I personally put in. Golf brings out the competitive side of me that I never knew I had. I have a strong desire to play at the next level. I would absolutley love to be around girls who share the same priorities, passion for the game and work ethic as I do".
The GMC Women's Golf team will begin competition in the Fall of 2018 as they will have 3 Fall tournaments, and 5 Spring Tournaments. "I have been very pleased with the caliber student athlete that is looking at and making visits to GMC. We have three more recruiting visits before the holiday break. Every single young lady that has already been here and will be coming to make visits are the type of student athlete that will compete on the course as well as exemplify the type of character that represents Georgia Military College in the way we want to be represented", Gillespie stated.
