On Monday, May 6, multiple generations of GMC Alumni and supporters gathered together at The Club at Lake Sinclair to show their support for GMC Athletics at The 28th Annual Lew Cordell Memorial Golf Tournament. Lew Cordell was a tremendously successful football coach at GMC and an inductee in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. He was greatly respected by his players and peers and each year the Athletic department honors his contribution to GMC by holding this golf tournament. "The majority of the proceeds of the golf tournament directly supports the scholarship endowments of our student athletes, and its success over the years is all because of you the players and our sponsors," stated Bert Williams Athletic Director/Head Football as he welcomed nearly 100 players to the event. Coach Williams specifically thanked The Club at Lake Sinclair as a Gold Level sponsor as well as Butler Ford & Honda of Milledgeville, Coca-Cola United, and Borden Perlman who were Silver level supporters of the of the event. Century Bank, Garbutt Construction, Sellers Construction, Bug House, Lake Country Painting, and Adidas rounded out the tournament sponsors at the Bronze Level. He went on to acknowledge many businesses and individuals who supported the event as hole sponsors and those that donated to the auction. The auction offered up some great gifts highlighted by autographed jerseys and footballs from the LA Rams, Denver Broncos, and Atlanta Falcons supplied by former GMC players and friends of the program.
While this day is more about supporting the program and getting together with old friends, there is a score, and where there is a score there will be a winner. Twenty-five teams battled, and I mean battled in the loosest sense of the term, it out over 18 holes. In the end Team Exchange Bank comprised of Tripp Becker, Curt Flournoy, Eric Kobbe and John "Mad Dog" Lee took home the overall Championship by shooting low round of 50. With all the games and score boosters built into this event 21 under is a typical winning number. Team Sellers Construction comprised of Andy Smith, Dick Burns, Peter Burns, and Harry Johnson took home the 2nd flight championship and Team Select Floor Covering with Chris Burns, Darrell Burgess, Brent Rogers, and Brad Prosser took home the third flight championship.
If you missed this event, but would like to support the GMC JC Athletic Department, there are many opportunities to do so. For the 2019-2020 season the Athletic Department is searching for team sponsors and game day sponsors where you will have an opportunity to expose your business to GMC supporters. The next fundraising event will the 2019 Alumni Golf Outing and it is slated for Friday, October 18.
