The table was set for our Women's Soccer to have a breakout performance against rival Gordon State. Our team was well-rested and primed to deliver. A late surge by Gordon stole the win from the Bulldogs as they settled for a disappointing 3-3 tie.
For the last few years, the road to the NJCAA tournament has gone through this matchup. The teams often play three to four times a year and everyone knows the importance of this game. Going into the match Coach Morgan felt great about their chances. "We have seen them play, we know we match up well, we just have to execute", as the game unfolded coach's thoughts were almost realized.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring at the nineteen-minute mark when Emma Snider weaved her way past the backline and ripped one into the corner. Just before the half ended, Annah Norman's creative ball control led to another Bulldog goal and the lead was now 2-0 at the half.
The Bulldogs were feeling loose and playing well as they were able to extend the lead to 3-0 as Sidney Palinkas chipped in a feed from Valentina Orozco. For the next 20 minutes of play, the Bulldogs kept pushing and making plays. Lindsay Mathis made save after save and they kept taking shots, 18 in total for the game. As good teams do, Gordon State fought back. A through ball set up their first goal and then one minute later, a floater from outside the 18 snuck past the outstretched fingers of Mathis. Seven minutes later a defensive lapse resulted in a 3-3 tie. The teams would add two periods of extra time but no one could score. After one hundred and ten minutes of play, these two rivals walked off the field with a 3-3 tie.
"It's a disappointing result," commented Coach Morgan, "we had this game and just let it fall through our fingers." She praised the play of Goalie Lindsey Mathis who recorded eighteen saves and Jasmine Hochstetler, who battled illness to deliver a strong performance. You can bet the Bulldogs have September 24 circled on the calendar as that is their next chance at Gordon State.
The Bulldogs next home game will be Friday, September 13. They will be hoping for some better luck as ABAC comes to town for a 3 pm start.
