Friday Night Lights took on a very different connotation for the GMC Junior College Cross Country teams on 20 September. The team traveled to Cartersville, GA to participate in the Wingfoot Invitational, a cross country jubilee where there were a total of 16 races and over 6000 total runners. In addition to the challenging course, the race had the added fun of requiring the runners to clear hay bales during the race. The Atlanta Track Club hosted a great meet and the GMC runners did not disappoint with their performances.
Treeauna Whiting led the women's team with a 23:02 over the 5k course. Her time makes her the 2nd to qualify for the NJCAA National Championship in November. She joined Abigail Gash as qualifiers for the National Championships, while Gash finished 2nd for the team. Shundrenna Harris, Giselle Reyes, and Jessica Sinno were the other scoring runners for the team. GMC finished in 13th place in the college race and was the fastest NJCAA team at the race. To cap off a great week, the women's team was ranked by the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as the 6th best team in the nation in DIII NJCAA Cross Country.
Christopher Flynn led the way for the running Bulldogs with a 32:29 for the 8k. He was followed by Brett Darling, Jose Luiz Gonzalez, Partick Smith, and Sean Verner. The men's team finished in 15th place and was the 2nd place NJCAA team at the race.
