GMC Women's Soccer (11-7-1) won against Spartanburg Methodist 3-2 to advance to the NJCAA Southeast District Championship game. The injury-riddled Bulldogs had a "complete team effort to earn the victory", said Coach Morgan, "We are excited to go to another …Ship."
This would be just the second Bulldogs win that did not include goals by sharpshooters, Emma Snider or Camila Penagos. Emma played sparingly coming off a concussion and Camilla was injured at the start of the second half but the Bulldogs would rely on some unlikely faces to get the job done and make it happen.
Carson Griffin got the scoring started as she ripped a shot and followed her rebound to get the deflection earning her fourth goal of the year. The teams battled up and down the field for the remainder of the half with most of the play in favor of the Bulldogs. SMC did make a run which was turned away by a diving Havyn Isaac to keep the Bulldogs ahead.
The second half started with Abbie George making the score 2-0 as she found the back of the net off a free-kick just outside the 18', earning Abbie her second goal of the year. SMC cut the lead to 1 when they scored at the 69-minute mark but the Bulldogs, Valentina Orozco picked her 2nd goal of the year on a nice through pass from Nikki Blake just one minute later. SMC put on the pressure in the closing minutes and while they would pick up one goal late in the game, the backline Cassandra Ruff, Annah Norman, and Jasmine Hochstetler stood tough while Havyn Isaac made a couple of big stops to close the door. Havyn played the full 90 minutes grabbing 7 saves and picking up her 4th win of the year.
Coach Morgan was pleased with her teams' performance. She was most impressed with the way the players stepped up when needed. Winning a game like this without the services of four key players is a huge credit to the work the team has done all year. Coach Morgan awarded the game ball to Abbie George for her hustle and scoring that big goal to open the second half.
The Bulldogs will face the Titans of Eastern Florida in the NJCAA Southeast District Championship game on Friday, November 8 at 3 pm at Gordon State College. The Titans are 13-0 and ranked #2 in the country. The game can be viewed at https://www.facebook.com/gscladyhighlanders
