The #9 ranked GMC Bulldogs traveled to Scranton, PA and came up short of pulling off the biggest upset of the year against #2 ranked Lackawanna College. The Bulldogs led in most statistical categories but could not get that final score to make it so.
The game did not start well for the Bulldogs, the first 7 possessions ended with four punts, 2 fumbles and an interception that resulted in Lackawanna leading 16-0. Towards the end of the first half, the Bulldogs offense finally began to connect, they put together a 10 play, 42-yard drive that ended in an Ashton Musgrove 42-yard field goal to bring the score to 16-3 at half-time.
The start of the second half had Bulldogs fans back in the hot seat as a short kick and a penalty gave Lackawanna the ball on GMC's 38, 4 plays later the Bulldogs were down 23-3. The next possession ended with an interception and the Bulldogs were back on defense, Ty Washington made a tackle on a 4th and 2 to get the ball back in the hand of the offense on their own 17. The offense continued to struggle as a 3 and out gave Lackawanna another short field advantage and extending the lead to 30-3.
The Bulldogs seem to find a way when their backs are against the wall and on the next drive things started to click, Bohn connected with Trey Brown for a 69 yard TD to cut the lead to 21. The defense stood tall and forced a 3 and out giving the offense the ball on their own 29. Nicholas Bohn orchestrated a 5 play, 71-yard drive highlighted by a Tye Edwards 44 yard run, followed by a 14 yard TD scamper cutting the lead to 16-30. The defense forced another short possession and with the 3rd quarter coming to an end the momentum was with the Bulldogs.
In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs offense was on the move again with an 11 play drive for 63 yards that ended with Bohn finding Anthony Cooper in the end zone for an 8 yard TD moving the score to 23-30. After the teams traded short possessions, the Bulldogs got pinned deep in their end and with another short field, Lackawanna scored to regain a 14 point lead. Another long drive yielded no points but did give Lackawanna poor field possession, the defense then forced a 3 and out to give the Bulldogs another shot and Bohn answered with a 28 yard TD pass to Torenio Davis to once again get the Bulldogs within striking distance. With 1:08 remaining the onside kick was recovered by Lackawanna and they snuck away with the 37-30 victory.
Bohn ended the day with 22-38 with 336 yards and three TDs. Tye Edwards gained 86 yards in 11 carries and Torenio Davis had 10 catches for 138 yards and a TD, Trey Brown also had a big day with 6 catches for 136 yards including a 69 yard TD. Defensively, Ty Washington and Marlon Jackson each had 6 tackles while Marvin Dallas, Keylin Roach, Markell Anderson, and Yaya Diaby had 4 each. Dallas and Kwame Scott also picked up a sack each.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to #12 in the rankings. They are now awaiting the decision of the Bowl committees to see if they will have one more game this year.
