David Turner and CG Cadet Casey Owen traveled to Ft. Benning, Ga. to attend the NRA National Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championship. The Akron Zips were the overall winners with a aggregate score of 4491 and won their third straight title. The second place team's aggregate score belonged to Grand Valley State University of Michigan with a score of 4447. Third place was North Dakota State University also scoring 4447, but the tie was broken with how many ten's were scored on the targets.
The competition was in two days, with small bore leading day one. Both David and Casey had been shooting small bore for the first time in competition this year. David Turner shot an outstanding 520-10X in small bore (42). He had scores Prone: 89-94=183, Standing: 85-84 =169, Kneeling 85-83 =168. Casey Owen(41) shot Prone: 95-93=188, Standing: 82-74=156, Kneeling: 79-84=163, total 507-6X. In air rifle David Turner shot a 528 and Casey Owen shot a 535.
The highlight of the tournament was the "Fun Shoot" which was held by the AMU Marksmanship Team at Ft. Benning. The shooters competed in games for the afternoon and attended a wonderful rifle clinic hosted by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. The banquet was held at the Ironworks that evening where the awards were given to the shooters and pictures taken.
